It is the first week of November in an even year.
That means we're supposed to be having elections.
Not so much.
The local propaganda reports that due to the continuing Emergency, it is not possible to establish polling places or conduct elections. Therefore local elected officials or their appointed replacements (generally, but not always due to sudden death) will continue in service.
The national propaganda is saying nothing. No protests, no coverage. Just a lot more American flag waving and ranting about the way the Firecracker War popped America one right in the heartland.
Wyatt's forbidden listening to the BBC tells a different story. Riots in suburban Illinois as irradiated survivors of Chicago are moved south. The Congress dispersed to an "alternate meeting site" in "rural Virginia" due to the "constant threat of renewed nuclear strikes." But two bits of horrible news from the Beeb.
First of all, they have started a new radio show. "Voices of America." They start by announcing that participation is at your own risk. They go over a brief class on information security. Then they publish E-mail addresses and ask for Americans to comment. We are not _about_ to risk 3300 lives by participating. But the Beeb reads the juicy ones daily.
"In Dallas, the stores are empty, men are being drafted off the streets for the military. The airport is a closed Federal zone. Parking garages surrounded by chain link fence. From a distance you can hear screams and cries."
"In the North East Quarter of DC, no one has jobs, no way to get through the security barriers to get to work. No one can afford to buy drugs, everyone scrapes to buy food. Gardening, composting, rooftops. Helicopter patrols but otherwise the police have pulled out."
"New York City, if you don't have an internal passport, you don't get in. Plenty of food on the shelves. NYPD and Homeland everywhere. You have to show your phone, do you have the Homeland app? If not you are taken into the transit system and _never_ seen again."
Obviously no elections.
Here's the other horrible BBC piece. They have a Web site, a TOR based Onion, devoted to America. They claim to have satellite intel of many parts of America. Through an old style Google Maps filter, imagery courtesy of the Russian government.
That's a hell of a prize - and one worth taking some significant risks for.
The Ammunition Technical Working Group is deeply divided.
"Do you have an idea how valuable just ONE SATELLITE IMAGE of post-War Bay Area would be?"
"Do you have any idea how it easy it would be to trace back to us and get us sidewalked?"
I make the decision. No.
But I have contacts. I won't call them friends. They listen to BBC too.
Through cut-outs, the word comes back. Actually a micro SD card, handled carefully.
In the Room, Wyatt and I view the images.
I keep a stern face. I know what I'm about to look at.
The United States has been cut up into security control zones.
We are in the heart of one of the largest.
