I am in Spain and headed to France and thence the United Kingdom.

I am told that I am to see the Palace at Versailles.

Anything LJ-land thinks I should see?

Wherever you are just ask a taxi driver to take you on a tour and tell them how much you are willing to spend. Tell them what kind of stuff you like to see.

If you get to London I would say that must sees are the British museum (huge) and the Crown Jewels in the Tower. And the wax museum if you have time. You are allowed to touch the figures unless they are roped off...

London Suggestions

Personal opinion from my trip there-

*GET an Oyster Card if you're spending more than two days in London. Make sure you get a week's pass on it. It makes using public transit around London so much easier. I only rode in a Taxi once when I was there.
*Take the Total London Experience tour-it hits all the big highlights in terms of the "tourist" attractions.
*Imperial War Museum and British Science Museum are well worth the trip.
*I wish I'd known you had to get tickets for a BBC tour, but do go.
*Bletchley Park is a good half-day trip, lots of neat history there.
*Explore London's shops and shopping areas. Definitely worth checking out are Harrods and Camden Lock Market are both "must see" places.
*A good calender if you want to do naughty things...

There's a lot to do there-and the usual issue is almost always "I wish I'd known when I was there and had the time...".

Well... since you'll be around Paris...

If you are into Classic Music, and since you'll be RIGHT THERE, there is the Venice Vivaldi Versailles concert happening AT the Versailles. http://en.chateauversailles.fr/news-/events/spectacles/venise-vivaldi-versailles-en

Not all that far away, of course, is the Lovre Museum http://www.louvre.fr/llv/commun/home.jsp?bmLocale=en

There is also the Meniagre, the oldest Zoo in Europe. http://www.mnhn.fr/museum/foffice/tous/tous/guidePratique/infPratiques/infopratique/fiche_info.xsp?i=1&idx=5&SITE_ID=10&nav=liste&LIEU_ID=210

You could visit the Catacombs http://www.timeout.com/paris/paris/venue/1%3A9663/les-catacombes

There is just so many things to do in and around Paris that I am just scratching the Big Tourist type things. (Well, okay.... D&D Geek/Art Tourist Things). I am sure you can find something interesting to see or do.

See the Eiffel Tower and visit a cafe. Other than that go to the Louvre and ride the Metro.

If you get out that way, you can cover a thousand years of warfare in one afternoon. Normandy hosts the Bayeux Tapestry, which tells the story of the Norman invasion of England and the Battle of Hastings. From there, it's a short drive to the Normandy beaches, site of the D-Day landings.

In Paris, one must see Les Invalides. Final resting place of many of France's greatest warriors. Napoleon is there, as is Marshal Foch.

In France?

Normandy, if you get a chance. Verdun. Just south of Normandy-- Mont St Michel is definitely worth a look. But if you're stuck just in the Paris area-- check out the Opera Garnier (the old Paris Opera House).

In Britain? If you're getting out into the countryside and far enough north-- Hadrian's Wall. Far enough west-- Harlech, Conwy, and Caernarfon are some of Edward I's most impressive castles. Bannockburn, Stirling, and Culloden are worth a look in Scotland.

In London itself-- definitely go see the Tower of London.

In Paris, we made it to the Louvre, the Palace at Versailles, and the Eiffel Tower, rode the Metro, and went to a cafe. Much beauty. The part that wasn't worth the trouble was the Metro; LOTS of stairs, with a wheelchair (!), and no elevators at all.

In London, we saw the Tower Bridge (which many people mistake for the London Bridge, the Crown Jewels, and the British Museum.

Not bad for a criminally-poorly-planned whirlwind tour. Much thanks to Drew and Lara for their help, and apologies for putting so much wear and tear on them.
