Bay Area fandom is mourning the loss of one of its own tonight. Others of us have been touched by this same scourge. More of us will die from it.

My father did not die of cancer. This was unexpected due to the nature of his work. Heart failure aggravated by lung damage took him out. He chose to go instead of risking life stuck on a ventilator.

My father in law died of cancer. While I was there with my now ex-wife for her and for her family, my mother died.

My mother and my stepfather died of cancer, at home, under hospice care. I did what I could which was not much, and part of that was to watch them gutter like a stubbed candle. Bright flares, flickers, smoldering and ash.

In my seeking and my wandering through life, I have discovered one tiny bit of truth that will comfort me when my time comes, whether that is in a moment's flash of violence or in my own long slow guttering. I share it only in the hopes that it will comfort someone else.

We endure from life to life. Fear not annihilation of spirit. Be comforted that our deaths are as small as our lives are large. If there be a Goddess, she holds out Her hands in protection over us. If not, we shall have to invent her retroactively and grow mighty enough "not merely to beat Death, but to rob it." (Spider Robinson, "Deathkiller")
