A vote for Prop. 8 is a vote for hate.

If you agree and have voted or plan to vote "No!" on Prop. 8, post this in your LiveJournal, Twitter, Facebook, and so on.

"If marriage is illegal only criminals will get married."

A vote for 8 is a vote that says, yes, if I am different in ANY way it is ok to later discriminate against ME. It says yes, I want Big Brother to tell me what I can and can not do. I have a friends only journal. And my friends are all voting no. :)

I believe that marriage was originally a business contract between 2 family groups(clans, families, etc.) to be mutually beneficial to all. Nothing more, nothing less. (btw, cultural anthropolgy is one of my fave subjects-aced in college)

I love cultural anthropology too, especially learning about the relationships between gender and social role.

You are correct about the business contract thing. The only catch is that it was mutually beneficial *overall* and not to each individual (in other words, the actual couple getting married was not necessarily happy with the arrangement - it was just another family obligation).

My mother constantly reminds me how lucky I am to have no such obligation.

Correct, but I posted from work on my phone during my lunch, so I had to make do with limited time and space.

Hence the caveat "mutually beneficial to all".

The young couple may or may not have been happy with the arrangement, but that also depends, in part, on the culture and the time period as well.
