The proposed bailout by the US Treasury is completely and utterly unacceptable to me as a taxpayer. It is merely bank robbery on the grandest scale.
If it is truly necessary, in your informed opinion, to forfeit seven hundred billion ($700,000,000,000) in the name of salvaging the world economy, I want the taxpayers to realize substantial value for the money.
A bare minimum package would include: compensation limits for all executives of companies purchased (no more than the salary of the President of the United States seems reasonable); aggressive prosecution of all persons who broke the laws to create this ridiculous situation, with a formal policy of mandatory jail time; granting bankruptcy judges the power to modify home mortgages to further the worthy social goal of middle class home ownership; and considerable long-term oversight by Congress and the courts as to how these monies are wisely spent. I'm sure you can think of additional appropriate controls.
Any Senator or Representative who votes in favor of a bailout, either at committee level or in the larger House or Senate, who does not insist on substantial protections for the public and the taxpayer will PERMANENTLY and FOREVER lose my vote and my respect. Further, I will offer both my time and financial support in my local House and California Senate races to their opponents in their next election.
I have a master's in [Sociology] and a BA in political science -- and this particular theft is so outrageous that I am willing to devote considerable resources to destroying the political careers, insofar as I am able, of any politician who votes in favor of this loot job of the United States Treasury.
Please do all that is within your power as a United States [Senator/Representative] to resist this theft of the taxpayer. Thank you for your attention.
