Right now, as soon as you finish reading this post, Get Up and check your smoke detectors! Make sure they have working 9 volt batteries in them and you have at least one in your bedroom and one outside your bedroom. Push the "test" button and make sure they alarm properly.
Do NOT go to sleep until you have done this. The life you save could be your own, or it could be someone else's.
If you don't have a smoke detector, go buy two. WalMart carries them for under $10. There are 24 hour WalMarts in many areas.
And if you can, throw a few bucks here: http://www.filknet.org/gem/

I have no idea whether or not the person who died did so because of a non-working smoke detector. I do know that a working smoke detector in your home can and will help save you and your family's life in a fire. IF IT WORKS.
Other good ideas include having a family escape plan, making sure that your bedroom has two exits (so that you can get out if your escape is cut off), fire extinguishers in strategic spots such as kitchen and garage, and last but not least, check your home for fire hazards monthly.
