San Jose firefighters doused a blaze this afternoon in a downtown apartment building that is home to at least 200 elderly and disabled residents.
The blaze at Town Park Tower, on North Third and North Fourth streets between Santa Clara and St. John streets, was sparked sometime around 11:40 a.m. It was out by around 12:15 p.m., San Jose fire captain Craig Chwinge said.
Passersby saw smoke coming from the balcony of a 10th-floor apartment. It is likely that the blaze damaged the two apartments that share the balcony.
A few dozen residents and staff at the building evacuated . . .

first to City Hall, then to the San Jose Senior Center, where the Santa Clara Valley chapter of the American Red Cross set up shelter operations. Support was provided by the ARC-SCV First Aid Services Team, or FAST.
FAST, composed largely of First Responders and Emergency Medical Technicians, is sponsored by the American Red Cross and operates under medical protocols. FAST has deployed in several local and national disasters including the Croy Hills fire and Hurricane Katrina, and is ready to deploy two vehicle-based basic aid stations, one golf cart patient transport, and two EMS bike units at a moment's notice to support and augment the emergency medical services system anywhere in California.
(FAST has also provided me with about a dozen major patient contacts in the past three months, and hordes of minor contacts.)
