Amtrak: a hole in the EMS system

I wonder if Amtrak conductors even have basic first aid training? The kits on board the trains are VERY limited. There are clearly insufficient supplies on board in case of a rail accident or derailment.
If a medical emergency occurs aboard the train, their SOP is to call their dispatch for an ambulance to intercept at a highway crossing.
Most care on board Amtrak trains is provided by EMS-trained travelers. That in itself says something right there.

Date: 2007-07-03 04:07 am (UTC)The lack of medical training -sadly- probably wouldn't have made much difference. When I worked for Santa Clara Co. Transit, the Sherrif's Dept. admitted to a couple of instances of arresting people off of Transit for apparent drunkeness, having been told that the person was diabetic & the persons later dying of diabetic shock.
Of course, this doesn't happen all of the time (I worked there for 11 years), but after the first instance, you'd think that they would've learned....
