I only thought I was burned out. When it's life and death, you find the strength. Or you become zombie chow.

See this for details.

Be advised, I am on the second floor of my work building. Zombies _like_ managers.

I am looking from the interior balcony out over a small sea of desperate zombies. We are rigging reusable and secondary weapons to thin the herd. One stairwell is secured by a truck parked in the lobby so as to block the stairwell lower door. The other stairwell was temporarily made slippery by large quantities of cooking oil, then walled off using salvaged internal steel beams. Fortunately we had a construction project upstairs.

Our initial report was a zombie biting one of our guards at about 10 AM this morning. He faxed in a detailed IR and one of our managers went to go check on him. The manager's screams (via cell) alerted us to the desperation of our plight.

I took a calculated risk and drove home long enough to collect roommate, cats, supplies and equipment. Good thing I did. A lot of it has already been very handy. Kitties are locked in an unused office. They are my sanity check.

I am uniformed, armed and have murdered two bitten humans. Incubation period appears to be insanely short, only about three hours in the longest cases and in one indeterminate case as little as thirty minutes. Immediate high amputation under quasi-sterile conditions (fire axe to upper arm thirty seconds after hand bite) was ineffective in preventing zombification. Any person bitten must be expelled or executed AT ONCE. First aid is inadvisable, we lost two people to first aid attempts.

All blood and body fluids from a zombie or bitten person must be considered an immediate and deadly pathogen. Persons in close combat are advised to wear heavy clothing including boots, heavy pants, heavy jacket, gloves to extent feasible, balaclava, helmet, N95 or better mask and goggles. Baseball bats are recommended as most effective weapon to date. Untrained persons should use staffs pikes en masse where feasible. Take care not to create deliberate or accidental barbs on improvised weapons, as they catch zombie clothing and/or ribs and disarm the wielder.

We are in Internet communication with various locations around the world and are setting up a Wiki for tactical and strategic collaboration. We expect to retain power for at least another few hours, do not have generator backup, but will keep one laptop up with all of the salvaged UPS we can obtain. We share the building with several major network nodes, so no fear on this score, and among us have accounts and equipment on every major broadband wireless network.

For lack of a better trained person, I have assumed incident command for the building. Operations and CQB is under control of a former U.S. Marine sergeant; he has sent a detailed report to his chain of command and requested aerial resupply as convenient. Others are running food, water, sanitation, clothing, medical (mostly prevention), logistics, construction, radio monitoring and weapons manufacture committees. We number one hundred and two survivors out of a normal business day population of three hundred.

Based on what we're hearing from radio scanners and monitoring various nets, San Jose is pretty hosed. San Jose Police dispatch was first to go at about 1130, final signoff "America's Safest City! Aaargh!!!" SJPD's air unit crashed about an hour ago, unwilling to land and out of fuel. We had no way to call them even though we waved improvised marker panels from the roof. Visual observation shows a number of fires in San Jose downtown, chaos at the airport with the eastern runway fully blocked by a crashed jetliner. Westernmost runway appears OK but do your own assessment before attempting landing. Freeways and populated areas are much as you would expect, impassable and full of cars and the living dead.

We could use resupply on ammunition, arms and food, but we'll be OK for at least the next two weeks. Several hundred gallons of water, aside from those in the building pipes, have been set aside. Our facilities person lived and operated appropriate valves, etc.
