Men: You're That Guy, Right?

A cogent question about men and rape from [livejournal.com profile] cereta:

"And I am sure that you, Guy Who Is Reading This, is That Guy. You're the guy who would never rape . . .

"... a girl passed out on your bed (who, for that matter, knows that such an act would be rape), or the woman in the village your battalion/troop/whatever is overrunning. You're the guy who wouldn't do such a thing even when his buddies were heckling him, telling him he's a fag and a pussy if he doesn't. Even more, you're the guy who would stop his frat brother from raping that girl, and get her home. You're the guy who would stop his comrades, or at least report them."

"And to lose the sarcasm for a minute, I'm sure some of you are. Lord knows, I believe that of most of the men I am close to. Or at least, I desperately want to."

"Now, here's my question: where the fuck are you?"

There's a lot of good stuff about why this isn't as common as we'd like, at least by implication there is, in Philip Zimbardo's The Lucifer Effect.

This is the woman who says we're supposed to shut up and obey her, right? And she wonders where we are, when we're treated no better by the other side of her equation?

There are bad, evil, terrible people out there who will hurt YOU. It is frightening to realize that many of them think they aren't bad, evil, terrible people.

There are also people who do intervene in bad situations. And many of them don't think they are good people.

I get what she is trying to say, I do. I get the message. I understand what she's after, and I think that it is a subject worthy of public discourse. I even agree with the goal.

However, I do not think that insulting the very people you're trying to reach is going to help. Maybe that's just me...
