BayCon panel schedule
All snark aside, I take my responsibilities as a panelist and as a moderator very seriously. Our Guestly mission is to deliver maximum light-to-heat ratio on the topics assigned, and I consistently do everything in my power to make sure it happens that way.
As the most ignorant and least informed person in the room, it generally falls to me to make sure that people get asked the stupid questions and share the most interesting insights. Whoops, the snark is back.
I try to keep personal and professional a tiny bit insulated. Thus, drewkitty. No biggie, though.
FRIDAY
7:00 PM Stevens Creek How to Moderate a Panel
What do you need a moderator for, anyway? What makes someone a good (or bad) moderator? Expert moderators share their tips and tricks.
Kristina Kopnisky (M)
[mew]
Ed Green
Kay Pannell
As you may have inferred, I am in the stable of Baycon moderators. That does not mean I am a stable moderator . . .
SATURDAY
11:30 AM Bayshore The Adventures of Audie Murphy in the 23rd Century
Military science fiction frequently features characters, politics, and technology that have the feel of something from several centuries in the past. Does history really repeat itself? Is the reality of future warfare is too boring to make good fiction? Or are the writers just too lazy to be creative?
Ed Green (M)
Doug Berry
[mew]
Linda Clements
Ed Muller
Yay! A fun panel! We're going to need one . . .
Saturday
2:30 PM Winchester Pandemics: The Ride of the Second Horseman
SARS. Swine Flu. Anyone watching the news knows that we've had a number of close calls this century. Is a global pandemic inevitable? And what steps can be taken to contain or mitigate an outbreak when one occurs?
[mew] (M)
Howard Davidson
Patricia MacEwan
Sydney Thomson
Cordelia Willis
I said I'd moderate another disease panel when pigs fly. Look! Swine flu!
Saturday
4:00 PM Alameda Diversity 2.0
If half the 'Verse was settled from Asia, where were the Asians in Firefly? Is media casting changing to better reflect global diversity or has progress effectively stalled since the original Star Trek? Does Hollywood need some sort of "affirmative casting" plan?
[mew] (M)
Rob Caves
Berry Kercheval
Justin Lloyd
Carlos Pedraza
Having thoughtfully Googled up my fellow panelists, I am awe inspired by the talent I'll be sharing the stage with. I should probably point out that I take a strict reading of the Talmud when asked to moderate, and that I plan to spend a large chunk of this panel with my ears wide open and my mouth wide shut, except as necessary to ensure decorum.
Saturday
5:30 PM Alameda Furgonomics: Interior Decorating for Non-Humans
Just exactly how do you go about designing a toilet for a gryphon? What about an alphabet that can be written by humans and dragons? How do you prevent your fur from getting caught in the cracks of a chaise lounge? Our panelists speculate on how physical form impacts the underlying psychology and artistic design of buildings and furniture.
[mew] (M)
Paula Butler
ElizaBeth Gilligan
Sarah Goodman
Dare forbidden love speak its name? Yet another stereotypical furry panel? Fortunately, I enjoy both ergonomics and building design. Not sure what I'll be moderating this time, but generally the Strategically Placed Panel is a bit of fun.
There is also the possibility of a stealth panel. This is where myself and one or more others take over a room that is completely empty and not in use, and proceed to follow the Emergency Panel Rules until we reach critical mass or burn out.
