You may have heard about the Chicago-area student who wrote some violent stuff for a free-writing exercise and was rewarded with arrest on disorderly conduct charges, being kicked from his high school, and his admission to the US Marine Corps revoked.

Here's his essay:

Allen Lee

Essay:

Blood sex and Booze. Drugs Drugs Drugs are fun. Stab, Stab, Stab, S...t...a...b..., poke. “So I had this dream last night where I went into a building, pulled out two P90s and started shooting everyone..., then had sex with the dead bodies. Will, not really, but it would be funny if I did.” Umm, yeah, what to wright about...... I’m leaving to join the Marines and I really don’t give a F*** about my academics, so why does the only class that’s complete Bull S***, happen to be the only required class...enough said. The model citizen would stay around to vote in new board member to change the 4 years of English policy, but no one really stays around to vote for that kind of local crap, so whoever gets there name on the Ballet with a pretty face gets to do what the F*** ever they want with local ordinance. A person is smart, but people are dumb selfish animals. We can’t make rules for ourselves so we vote others to do it for us, but we can’t even do that right, I meen seriously, Bush for President? And our other option was John Kerry who claimed to partake in Vietnam Special Forces missions that haven’t been declassified....F***ing Bull S***. So Power Flower Super Mario. Pudge, hook, rot, dismember “Fresh Meat.” Most new/young teachers are laid back, and cooperative with students as feedback and input into the curriculum and atmosphere. My current English teacher is a control freak intent on setting a gap between herself and her students like a 63 year old white male fortune 500 company CEO, and a illegal immigrant. If CG was a private catholic school I could understand, but wtf is her problem. And baking brownies and rice crispies does not make up for it, way to try and justify yourself as a good teacher while underhandidly looking for complements on your cooking. No quarrel on you qualifications as a writer, but as a teacher, don’t be surprised on inspiring the first cg shooting.

Author's Comments:

Author’s Note: This production of the writing is done in the most accurate manner I can depict of the original writing. Grammar and spelling mistakes are included at the best accuracy possible. The first phrase in questions is in fact a Green Day song. The second reference to drugs is in relation to the schools history of drug problems. I am personally clean of all controlled substances. The statement in quotes is done so as a non personal statement as I would have done in reference to a character for a story. The reference to the gun P90 is from a video game, combined with a reference to necrophilia as a comment regarding a seriously messed up situation. A situation such as the rape of villagers during a raid by U.S. troops in Vietnam. I really do not care too much about by continuing academia as in relation to grades. I do however believe on continuing my personal education, and I am actually still working for my classes. My views on the graduation requirements explain themselves. The reference to Mario and Pudge(a DOTA character) are completely random in this essay. The reference to a person being smart and people being dumb is based on a quite from “Men in Black.” I generally do believe the public opinion is best. The rest of the essay is rather self explanatory, the main statement in question I have already released a comment online about. I request that all information I have released is read together, and nothing is given separately or as an excerpt as the administration has seen fit to do.

On an additional note, I have completed the MEPS (Military Entry Processing Station) examinations, and yes a psychiatric evaluation is included in the process. If I’m qualified to defend the country, I believe I am qualified to attend school.

I have written more disturbing things when I was much younger than Allan Lee. I even submitted some disturbing stuff to the campus newspaper. It's called fiction folks, and the fact that some of us out there can imagine things that scare the crap out of the rest of you is no excuse to haul us off to jail or ruin our lives.

My next post will be friends-locked. I will give a small example.

Of Course It Is.

I mean, if you let children think, who knows what they might decide to do? They might decide to become Republicans and soldiers and work in industry, rather than work for the government and be nice Tranzi Democrats. (/Sarcasm)

You read all this, I talk to my friends that have kids, and I'm convinced I'd probably would have blown a gasket if I was 14-16 these days. Especially in a public school. I was writing half-way decent BDSM porn when I was 17. (I think it's three-quarters way decent now, myself.) And writing stories of Truly Bad People getting their Just Deserts. And exploding.

And, everybody had a laundry list of reasons why it's gotten this bad. Zero-tolerance at school. YouTube. That students and kids are getting massive amounts of pressure from their parents. That for some kids, school is the ONLY place they're learning socalization skills. Clique pressure has become all-out war.

Doesn't matter why, I think. The question becomes now, what happens to fix it? Before the whole mess collapses.

But, Drew, while I do agree that this story is mostly harmless, it IS saying that the author wishes some kind of permenant justice to be taken out on the intended receiver of the letter.

While I am very willing to consider it to be another student just yammering for an F grade, in light of the timing, I can see where the teacher did have some fears. It does smack a little of a death threat from a psychotic. Heaven knows that his teacher didn't teach fiction in this manner. (Or at least, that is the assumption. High School English shouldn't have strayed too far from when I was taking it)

Ya know, back in my neighborhood, the teacher would have either laughed this off, or bribed a ganger to just watch his back... but you know, maybe that's just Santa Ana talking to me. You would think that teachers in Chicago would be about as tough. However, I can see where the teacher could be very concerned, as people tend to be after a crisis. Even if it isn't their own crisis.

... I just think that timing and the lack of wisdom on the author's part is the real issue here. Obviously the kid was rebellous against this teacher, and had utter contempt for authority. (How he was going to make it through Basic is beyond me) How much of this kid's history have we not seen? Can we be sure that this isn't just the last straw?

While I am for defending this kid's right to say whatever he pleases, and express whatever he pleases, he must also bear the responcibility for what he says, just like everyone else. Without knowing his past, I can not make judgement on if the schools reaction was appropriate. However, I can say that this kid was being inflamatory on purpose, and was hoping that something would happen. He just had no clue what that something was.

It sickens me that this kid will have a criminal record for following directions, in a bratty teenager manner, but it was just writing for God sakes. I think he bears watching, and perhaps some counseling, but a CRIMINAL RECORD. The world has gone totally mad I tell you!

On the other hand, they may be illegal, but I have KITTENS! There is a slight chance that I could end up with a criminal record for this as a city code violation....Mad I tell you, mad! Please remind Bast that I need some help, as Yahweh (I am) will get pissed if I ask directly. :)

P.S. Comment was deleted for wrong icon and re-posted.

It's utter insanity.
Writer was TOLD not to censor himself, it's a paper just going to the teacher-- and then he's getting censored, and worse, for following the assignment. We all have dark thoughts... should we all be locked up?

In a country where freedom of speech (as legitimately extended to writing) is supposed to be a right, guaranteed under the 1st amendment to the Constitution, this being made a criminal case without a distinct clear threat is utterly appalling to me.

If they're worried about Mr Lee and his potential for violence-- okay, I could see asking him to have a chat with the School Psychologist or some other mental health professional. Perhaps ask someone in Law Enforcement to talk to him and do a quick 'threat assessment' in case there is a potential for violence.

Criminal Charges? No.

Furthermore if there WAS any real potential for violence-- making this into criminal charges and possibly f***ing up large stretches of the kid's life going into the future, which is what the criminal charges will definitely do if he's convicted (the removal from school and mere existence of the charges has already made his life difficult)-- that will probably prevent him from entering the military altogether, make it much more difficult for him in finishing high school... cause possible difficulties with higher education and employment-- the way Chicago is handling it seems like the text-book very best way to try and provoke this kid into actually being criminally violent instead of writing about it.
