V1: Thank you for joining us.
V2: My pleasure.
V3: Mr Cartwright ... Major ... thank you for volunteering for this essential assignment.
V2 ([John] Cartwright, JC): What do you need me to do?
V3: Our San Jose campus ... it needs to be evacuated. Your convoy will bring supplies to tide things over and personnel to restore order. We are hearing disturbing things.
JC: Such as?
V3: Murders, disappearances, compromise of company confidential information to uncleared persons.
V1: Especially contractors. The day after the Firecracker, we dismissed our worthless contract guards and reassigned trustworthy persons to security duties. Given the problems we have had with that group, I shudder to imagine what it would have been like with the lowbrows we had before.
V3: But the SLE for San Jose says he cannot do without them. He has the military relationships, so we can't replace him. But the contract guards have to go!
V1: I told Accounts Payable to stop paying their invoices. That should help. But when you get there you have to be ready to take over. Physically.
V3: Josh has 29 years Federal law enforcement experience and manages our security both here and in Denver. I trust his judgment.
V1 (Josh [Whitaker, 21 years USG employment, 10y FBI non sworn accountant, 11y OMB budget analyst, JW): Thank you sir. I appreciate your trust.
JC: So this is like a hostile takeover?
JW: Yes.
V3: Restoration of order. In particular beware of this man, [Echo 18]. (paper rustle) He is a contractor ... supervisor who has dramatically exceeded his authority. He is also one of your murder suspects.
JW: Get rid of him.
V3: Whatever it takes.
JW: He surrounds himself with goons so you may only get one chance.
JC: Understood. What do we know about him?
JW: Goon, armed, a career guard. Pathetic. No law enforcement or military experience. But ruthless. He broke someone's hand with a sledge for back chat. Don't turn your back.
JC: Copy. How many men do I get for the convoy?
V3: About thirty. All we can spare. But with your supplies you'll be a hero and you can dictate terms.
(chair noise)
JW: Good luck Major.
V3: Good luck.
JC: Gentlemen.
(chair noise, door opens and closes)
V3: Convoy prepared?
JW: As ordered. Exactly.
V3: Good. We cannot have that squeaky clean asshole around here digging his nose into shit. He doesn't make it, fuck San Jose, I want those contracts. He does make it, takes out the guards, can't live without them, fuck San Jose, we get the contracts. He gets there and can live without the guards, fuck the SLE, fuck San Jose, we get the contracts. No way to lose.
JW: Absolutely sir.
