"A gunman opened fire [with a .22 caliber rifle] in the museum today, inflicting fatal injuries on security guard Stephen Tyrone Johns before he was shot himself by two other guards, but not Johns. Law enforcement said that white supremacist and keeper of an anti-Semitic website James von Brunn, 88, was under investigation in the shooting. Von Brunn is now at a D.C. hospital [and is listed in critical but stable condition]. A third person was injured by broken glass. Johns had worked as a security guard at the Museum for six years."
Sources consulted for this summary included various mass media accessible via Google News, including the BBC. [EDITED with better information.] Note that von Brunn's possession of a rifle was a felony as he was a convicted felon.
It is my proud duty to stand between people like von Brunn and those they would harm. My heart goes out to the family of murdered Special Police Officer (SPO) Stephen Tyrone Jones.

"He Died That Others Might Live"
It is a fairly rare thing in this business to get a glimpse inside the mind of an active shooter.
This active shooter had a personal Web site. [EDIT: Web site is down now. Wayback Machine is your friend.]
In 1981 he entered the Federal Reserve building in Washington DC with a number of firearms (but no ammunition) and threatened to murder two security guards. In his own words, he sought to:
( take the law into his own hands )
