impeachment
Jun. 11th, 2008 08:28 ama letter I wrote to my House representative today:
I am writing as a citizen to ask and instruct you to support the Articles of Impeachment against President George W. Bush, introduced this week by Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio.
Please act to force a roll call vote on the floor so that future generations of Americans will know where today's Congressional leaders stood on Bush's crimes.
Many Americans are well aware of the Bush administration's serious violations of the Constitution and Federal law, resulting in thousands of deaths and trillions of dollars wasted.
I do not believe that the Democratic Party leadership should dictate that crimes not be prosecuted because it is politically inconvenient to do so.
I respect your opinion that this is the wrong time to divide the country. Irregardless, the country is divided and action is needed to restore the faith of common Americans in the machinery of government.
If you do not support impeachment, clearly you do not represent me or the many, many other citizens who fear for the safety of our nation between now and January 2009.
Further, if Bush and his minions are allowed to leave office without punishment, what precedent will this set for future misbehavior by the executive branch? Some of the same people responsible for the current round of crimes may well re-enter power.
It is not just today's crimes but tomorrow's precedents that concern me. If Congress fails to assert its right to prosecute crimes committed by the executive branch, the power of future Congresses will be weakened and by extension our entire democracy.
In all seriousness, if the Democrats do not support impeachment, why should I ever vote for a Democrat again?
Thank you for your consideration.
